Do u have an older PD or Is it Sept 2006 EB-3 india then how can u file for I-485 in June 2007 when your PD was not current??
I think I have been very lucky so far. I don't think USCIS processes based on anything concrete, I think it's a little random. Or maybe I am just lucky.
I applied for PERM in Sep 2006 - EB3 - India.
I got approved for PERM in Mar 2007.
I applied for I-140 and I-485 concurrently in Jun 2007.
I-140 got approved July 20, 2007 and on July 23, 2007 I received all 4 receipts for I-140, I-485, EAD and AP. So my approval came before my receipt. I live in California so everything went to Nebraksa.
Lawyers emailed saying they also received the EAD card yesterday July 23, 2007.
Now I have to wait for only AP and Adjustment. And I still have 5 years left on my H1-B (2 years on this visa and then another extension).
So I say, anything is possible. I wake up every morning and pray to USCIS because they made my life better :) :) :)

There are lot of good/standard consulting companies ... Some are 'con' but they can't create massive impact , however the MNC's do MANIPULATION at a large scale.
I believe that small companies have a big impact too. As someone mentioned, check to see which companies filed GCs in the last 10 years....Infy, TCS or Small body shops?

I was in same dellima couple of months before. I was working as a permanent employee in USA but company was not doing good. My PD is feb 08 in EB-2. I weighted all options and decided to move back. Tried in couple of places and within 3 months got a good offer. Now working with world top 10 employer at bangalore as a Project Manager since Nov 09.
I am happy with my decision as of now.
I suggest its not worth waiting 10 years for GC. Life is more to be lived than to wait for GC.

USCIS can process recaptured numbers. If 200k numbers are in one year USCIS will plan for 200k numbers in that year.In 2000 they processed more applications after a immigration reform. One way of preventing wastage is plan to process all the applications in 11 months. If any unused numbers can be processed in that one month.

Of the 140,000 annual employment-based immigrant visas available, second and third preference categories are allocated 57.2%. If most of the employment based cases filed in July-August 2007 were second and third preferences, it could take approximately ten years of allocation to complete all these cases.
Although USCIS has posted on its website that I-485 cases received on or before August 9, 2007 have been entered into the system, a number of attorneys have not yet received receipt notices for cases filed at the end of June and July 2007. Moreover, some cases initially filed in Nebraska and transferred to Texas have now been forwarded to the Vermont or California Service Centers for faster processing of receipts.
USCIS is making every effort to process EAD applications within 90 days of receipt. The processing of Advance Parole applications may be delayed due to the number of cases filed.
A Biometrics notice will be issued even if a visa number is not available at the time.

I studied in IIT (B.Tech), got M.S. and Ph.D. from here and now a professor. My observations/opinions are as follows:

I have the misfortune of teaching 100's of students who come here with an Anna University (or Osmania) B.Tech./B.E. degree in engineering, and knows absolutely nothing. And I am not exaggerating: they cannot write an elementary program in any language (apparently they learn something called "theoretical" computer programming in which they do not actually learn to program); does not know any mathematics (most cannot integrate x*exp(x); one student could not tell me what is f(0.7) by looking at a graph of x vs. f(x)) and cannot operate simple lab equipments. It is just unbelievable! Anyway, moving on.
I am not sure why people jump onto drawing conclusions so fast...look at the above post from a so called professor....he encountered a couple of a folks from some universities & concludes that those universities are just crappy....!! Many of my colleagues are from the professors' "oh-so-good" list of IITs/univs and they are no better!! (In fact, some of them suck so bad)!!

Now another question for you prof....how come are you working in a university that's giving admissions to such a bunch of crappy folks...!!?? I think this is a really complex issue. We go thru a lot of thoughts now and then.
When I think rationally this is what I am concerned about:
1. Social isolation from family (brother/sisters/extended family) in the long run.
2. Inability to support aging parents.
The second issue weighs down on my soul more because supporting aging parents is a debt we are all supposed to pay back (regardless of ethnicity/class/caste/nationality/...). We are not supposed to run away from it. Some of us are lucky to have sibilings who are supporting the parents back home and that makes it a little easier. I know some of us even have single parents living by themselves.
The long wait makes it hard for you and wife. So you really feel frustrated and want to leave. At the same time waiting for GC your career has been stagnating for years, your wife hasn't had a job in years and that makes going back harder. Its like being stuck between a rock and a hard place. Things seem good with a GC in US and they look good back home but we seem to be getting neither ... *sigh*
